This chapter discusses that very few people can reasonably expect solar to completely replace their existing heat sources. In temperate climates, it will get very close with domestic water but less so with home heating. To erect a solar collector and feed its outflowing hot water straight into the hot tank is not very effective. In a pumped system, by carefully choosing the collector type, and judicious runs of pipework, one can ensure that the water drains out of the collector once the pump has been switched off. Two methods of protecting against frost damage can be used if the collector cannot be drained. |
