This experiment is designed to determine whether the acceptability of (optional) object resumptive pronouns is influenced by the animacy of the RP referent and its interaction with verbal argument structure. The narrow goal is to test the hypothesis that animacy effects for RPs are mediated via non-canonical alignments in argument structure. To do so, we manipulate the verb in a between-items design, identifying the following three classes of verbs: - verbs that entail an animate theme object, e.g., paca ‘wound’ - verbs that entail an inanimate theme object, e.g., kibes ‘launder’ - object-experiencer verbs that entail an animate experiencer object, e.g., hifxid ‘frighten’ Within each of the three verb classes, we manipulate Subject Animacy and whether the dependency tail is an RP or Gap in a 2 𐄂 2 design. The Object Animacy matches the verb’s entailments so that all sentences are plausible. Acceptability is measured using a six-point Likert-like scale. |
