The electron spin resonance (ESR) of K2SO4 irradiated by y, electron, neutron and fission fragments has been investigated. The ESR spectra are attributed mainly to the formation of SO3 −, SO4 −, SO2 −, and O3 − radical ions. The most intense radical ion observed was due to the SO3 −, and the other radicals were relatively much lower in intensity. Thermal annealing showed a significant decrease in the concentration of the radical ions. The concentration of SO3 − was measured in y-irradiated K2SO4 and K2SO4 containing fission fragments. In fission fragments irradiated K2SO4, the G-value observed for SO3 − radical formation was about eight times higher than that of y-irradiated K2SO4. This was attributed to the high LET (Liner Energy Transfer) of the fission fragments. |
