In 1897, a carpenter who had swallowed an unusually long nail, was brought to Prague Surgical Clinic of Professor Eiselt. A young medical assistant was on duty at the time, Rudolf Jedlicka, an enthusiast of new methods, and he took the patient to a pub called “The Black Horse” located in Na Přikopech street. The owner, Mr. Cifka, had installed for the pleasure of his guests the first X-ray apparatus in what was later to become Czechoslovakia. The X-ray picture, obtained after a very long exposition on January 12, 1897, showed the unusual position of the swallowed nail, and the nail was then removed by the surgeons (Tosovský 1990). |
