Popis: Summary Eighteen strains of deep-sea bacteria of the genera Alteromonas, Bacillus and Vibrio were tested for their capabilities to utilize twenty three organic compounds as sole carbon and energy sources. In seawater media containing 1.5 g peptone and 0.3 g of yeast extract per liter, all the strains grew well at temperatures between 1 and 20°C, but most of them did not show disctinct optimum temperatures for growth. Some of the strains utilized gluconate, fumarate, succinate, mannitol, arginine, aspartate, glutamate and ornithine as sole carbon and energy sources either at 4°C only, or at 4 and 20°C. Numerous other substrates were utilized only at 4°C. These data strongly emphasize the need for using environmental incubation temperatures in physiological and taxonomic studies of bacteria, especially from extreme environments. Otherwise, misinterpretation of results and erroneous classification of strains may be the consequence.
