In 1981 INTERA Technologies Ltd. and the Alberta Research Council began the joint development of a research aircraft facility. External placement of imaging probes was determined using a two-dimensional droplet trajectory model, the results of which are presented here. Based on predictions of velocity perturbation, as well as droplet trajectories and concentration factors, the under-belly location was chosen as best practicable with predicted changes in droplet mass flux from freestrean values of less than 12%. Results of the 2-D model were compared to 3-D analytical solutions and the measurements in stratiform rain. |
