Hydrogenation catalysts: A synthetic hydrogenase model

Popis: A series of complexes of Group VIII metals with square-planar chelating ligands has been prepared. Nickel(II) and palladium(II) complexes can easily be isolated in a pure state. Some of these complexes, especially PdII-SALEN, activate molecular hydrogen thus catalyzing HD exchange and the hydrogenation of olefins. A kinetic analysis shows a very close analogy in behaviour with that of hydrogenase. A mechanism for exchange and hydrogenation is suggested. Possible consequences for other transition-metal-containing enzymes are discussed.
