Popis: | The French-American-British morphologic classification scheme for acute leukemias has improved the understanding of the various types of this disease. This article, the third in a continuing education update series on hematology, reviews this system and the effect it has had on the diagnosis and treatment of acute leukemia. First, peripheral blood and bone marrow smears are used to distinguish acute leukemia from other dyshematopoietic or neoplastic disorders. Further distinction is made between acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Although some leukemic entities are not covered by this system, it has facilitated comparison of data from many different groups and resulted in improved treatment programs, periods of remission, and survival of patients. |
