In recent years, brain water content has been studied in various types of neurologic conditions by using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (proton NMR). Thus, it is possible to illustrate the brain water status on the basis of such parameters as proton density, longitudinal relaxation time (T1), and transverse relaxation time (T2). However, the literature dealing with basic studies of various types of information obtained with NMR is very small [1, 3, 6, 7]. Since little is known about the immature brain [2, 4, 5], we have measured the water content and the relaxation times (T1 and T2) in cerebral gray and white matters over time. The age range of the animals used extended from the 20th day of gestation to 8 weeks after birth. |
