Popis: Variables of age, income, education level, and gender, as reported in the 1982-83 Nationwide Recreation Survey, were used to determine if outdoor activities of older blacks differed from those of other older adults. Barriers to participation were also identified Of the 1,653 adults 60+ who comprised the sample, 136 were older 1 blacks. An activity score was computed for 2 outdoor activities (based on the variety chosen) and frequency of participation. Data showed extremely low levels of participation in outdoor recreation by older blacks. Fewer than 25% participated in any of the 22 activities: groups showed differences based upon race comparisons of similar income, age, gender, and educational attainment. General support for the ethnicity theory was noted, although further research is suggested to better understand ethnicity and marginality as theories explaining outdoor participation by this group.
