Diagnostic colonoscopy is an important aspect of colorectal cancer detection. It is also used in the workup of abnormal bowel habits, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and inflammatory bowel disease. Key aspects in evaluating a patient for colonoscopy include anticoagulation management, bowel preparation, and a discussion of the risk to benefit profile. This chapter reviews conscious sedation techniques and the endoscopic equipment needed for diagnostic colonoscopy. Technique for passing the colonoscope, including tips for loop formation and reduction, are discussed. Anatomic markers for lesion localization and modifications of technique in postsurgical anatomy are also reviewed. |
