Popis: The identification and sensing of nongeometric properties of the surface which affect the safety and hazard avoidance capabilities of planetary rovers are addressed. Topics discussed include terrain features of the lunar and Martian surfaces, rover mobility, and sensors for extracting information on the nongeometric hazards facing rover. Subsurface radar, multispectral imaging, and a ground truth sensor are considered to be the most effective sensors for determining surface properties and detecting nongeometric hazards.© (1991) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
