Postoperative pain management in children has been neglected until recently. The standard form of postoperative pain therapy is, unfortunately in most institutions, still 0.05–0.1 mg/kg of morphine intramuscularly every four hours, and in many situations even this inadequate form of therapy is not administered as frequently as ordered, or as necessary. Several investigators have evaluated the effectiveness of postoperative pain therapy in children and found it wanting (1–3). It appears from these data that 30% to 40% of children receive inadequate pain therapy in the postoperative period. |
