Popis: An experiment was conducted with rumen-fistulated identical-twin cattle to determine the effect of feeding expanded sorghum grain and finely ground hay on concentrations of rumen ammonia. Either expanded or cracked sorghum grain was fed with either ground or long alfalfa hay. Several possible combinations of the two types of grain with the two types of hay were compared within a pair of twins. The grain processing treatment influenced rumen ammonia-N concentration more than did the hay-processing treatment. Either expanded grain or ground hay reduced rumen pH and the ratio of acetic to propionic acid. Expanded grain increased total volatile fatty acids concentration more than did ground hay.
