Since the seminal article of M. Farrell about relative production efficiency in 1957, several researchers have studied the possibilities of estimating the potential production (frontier) of a firm, given a certain amount of production factors and the state of technology. This interest in defining the production frontier had been inspired by a concern to know exactly the level of actual production in relation to the production frontier and from this how to reach this frontier by increasing the total productivity of the firm under consideration. It was Farrell’s enormous contribution to develop a method that not only measured the production frontier but also abandoned the partial productivity approach by substituting for it a total productivity method. All the effects of production could now be taken into consideration. Once this step had been taken economists focused their efforts on measurement problems of the production frontier and the connected efficiency measure. |
