Ecdysteroids were studied during the moult cycle of male and female adult Artemia (Crustacea, Branchiopoda) from a Great Salt Lake population. Concentrations of ecdysteroids were measured in whole body extracts using RP-HPLC-RIA. Animals were microscopically selected according to the moult stages as determined by observing the setogenesis at the exopodite part of the thoracopods. Since moulting is always correlated with the reproductive cycle, females were further classified on the basis of the stage of ovarian development. The continuous presence of both free ecdysone and 20-OH-ecdysone was observed and their relative amounts were found to vary in relation to the moult stage. Our results showed sex-related differences for ecdysone. High and low polarity immunoreactive products (unidentified) were also present. |
