Popis: The discovery of 2,3,7,8 TCDD in Great Lakes fish and Herring Gulls during 1970 and 1980 became a major focus of toxic chemicals management programs internationally. Major activities have centered on the Niagara River and Lake Ontario commencing with a multiagency/government hazard assessment of TCDD in Lake Ontario commercial and sport fish. Source identification and remedial strategies for potential groundwater souces of TCDD in the Niagara Falls, N.Y. area have been proceeding in a cloud of controversy since 1980. Potential Canadian sources from the chlorophenol industry have been identified. Studies on atmospheric emissions and historical deposition of 2,3,7,8 TCDD have also begun to shed light on the elevated levels of dioxin experienced in the Great Lakes basin during the 1970's which declined until 1980. The current requirements for Great Lakes data regarding chlorinated dioxins and dibenzofurans will be discussed in terms of evaluating progress towards management of dioxins within the Great Lakes ecosystem.
