Popis: | Recent efforts to improve outcomes in critical illness have focused on the organization and management of the intensive care unit (ICU) [1]. There is substantial evidence that key elements of ICU organization, including intensivist physician staffing [2], nurse staffing [3], a high volume of critically ill patients [4] and the presence of multidisciplinary care providers, such as clinical pharmacists [5], are associated with improved quality of care in the ICU. Consequently, many recent quality improvement initiatives focus on improving ICU organization by expanding the number of different provider types in the ICU, rather than on the specific care process known to be associated with outcome [6]. |
