Popis: Clark explores the balance of iconoclasm via Cage, of compositional method and performance, and of the New Diatonicism as a “love of sound’ in Austin’s aesthetic. Childs and Austin discuss improvisation in Austin’s work and communication with audiences. They discuss theater and visual elements in his past works, improvisation and the uptake in European groups. Austin is interested in problems in composition, expresses his love for good “electrical” sound, and the role of solid-state synthesizers as new instrumental resources. They discuss the problems of mixing media, conservatism in university education, and the philosophical division in compositional styles in the 1960s. They discuss the problem of returning to old styles while avoiding kitsch, and define Austin’s “open style,” his piece for David Tudor, and critical approval.
