In this article, the South African History Online (SAHO) Web site is considered as an example of a successful electronic history resource. To introduce the topic, the relationship between libraries and the Web is briefly considered, and the challenges of creating an on-line resource are outlined. The article offers a short history of SAHO; explains its operations and aims; discusses the partnerships and other links it has forged; and finally discusses its advantages, availability and use as an on-line historical resource within a democratic society.
