Popis: Although the main part of the central nervous system is a radioresistant tissue, the activation of the neuro-endocrine axis and the subsequent stimulation of the radiosensitive recirculating lymphocytes may play a crucial role in the abscopal effects observed after irradiation of the head (IH).Therefore, we investigated the hematological parameters and phagocytic activity (PA) of leukocytes from peripheral blood (PB) and peritoneal exudate (PE) in rat after IH. Two experimental designs were used: 1. an early response was investigated at 30 and 120 minutes after IH with a dose of 14.35 Gy; 2. a late response was investigated at days 1,7, 14, 21, 35, 40 and 46 after 1H with a dose of 10 Gy. Analyses at the early time points after the irradiation revealed a significant increase in the numbers of erythrocytes and neutrophils in PB and increased PA as well as the phagocytic index (PI) of PB leukocytes. The late effects were observed only at the day 40 and 46 after IH. We found significantly increased numbers of erythrocytes, increased absolute and differential numbers as well as the PI of PB leukocytes. Furthermore, we observed significantly decreased numbers of mast cells and an increased PI of the macrophages in PE obtained at the days 7 and 46 after exposure. Taken together, our results indicate that in both models, irradiation of the head induced significant quantitative and qualitative changes in PB and PE of rat.
