A novel modification of an alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer with alkylisocyanates to prepare protective films against copper corrosion

Popis: An alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer adsorbed on copper has been modified with alkylchlorosilanes to form protective films of two-dimensional polymer against copper corrosion. In this study, alkylisocyanates were used for modification of an 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (MUO) self-assembled monolayer as alternatives of chlorosilane modifiers. Because procedures in the film preparation were simplified and the film was not contaminated with Cl−, modification with isocyanate was superior to that with chlorosilane. The protection efficiencies of the MUO monolayer modified with octyl- and octadecylisocyanate for copper corrosion in aerated 0.5 M Na2SO4 were high, 94.7% and 95.4%, respectively. These films were characterized by Fourier transform reflection and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies and contact angle measurement.
