Of the methods of separating the principal stresses used in the two-dimensional problem the only one available in the case of a three-dimensional stress distribution is that of a step-by-step integration along a line of principal stress. This method, moreover, is possible only when we are able to plot the chosen line of principal stress and to determine the magnitudes of the principal stress differences at a series of points on the line. These two considerations limit the application of the method in practice to lines of principal stress lying in a plane of symmetry, and in such cases an extension of the Lame-Maxwell equations to three dimensions can be used in conjunction with `frozen stress' observations. |
