SHORT COMMUNICATION: The relationship between megacolon and carcinoma of the colon: an experimental approach

Popis:	old and quite heavily endemic region for Chagas' disease, has not recorded any case of megacolon associated with carcinoma of the colon in 802 surgical specimens (unpublished data). These results are similar to those obtained in other studies. There is no explanation for the discrepancy between the high incidence of carcinoma of the esophagus in megaesophagus cases and the absence of carcinoma of the colon in megacolon cases. The objective of the present study was to test experimentally the hypothesis that megacolon prevents carcinoma of the colon using a combination of the methods for megacolon and carcinoma reproduction in rats. The former was developed by topical application of benzalkonium chloride (BAC*) to the distal colon and the latter was induced by s.c. injection of dimethylhydrazine (DMH). The animals used in this study were maintained in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Care and Use of Laboratory Animals of the National Research Council.
