Popis: A planktonic araphid diatom, Fragilaria gessneri Hustedt, originally described from Venezuela, was encountered in plankton samples from the north Horida coast of the Gulf of Mexico and examined with SEM. F. gessneri showed valve and cingulum details different from those of Fragilaria capucina Desmazieres, the generitype. Differences include central stauros, apical slit fields, vola-type occlusions on the areolae, striae aligned across the sternum and rudimentary median septa on the valvocopula. It is transferred to a new genus Desikaneis. Affinities with other closely related araphid diatoms are discussed. Fragilaria leptostauron var. stauroneiformis Woodhead et Tweed is transferred to Desikaneis and treated as a distinct species, D. stauroneiformis stat. et comb. nov. The extinct species Fragilaria riesgoviensis Schauderna is transferred to Desikaneis and a new species, D. howellii, collected from north Horida's drainage basins, is described.
