In spite of its high impact on individual lives as well as high societal cost, little is known about the etiology of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but multiple genetic, epigenetic, and environmental risk factors have been implicated. The inheritance of genes alone is not sufficient for developing SLE, suggesting the influence of environmental triggers on disease expression. This chapter explores what is understood regarding the epidemiology of the relationship between environmental exposures and SLE, as well as emerging areas of study. |
