Popis: Phototronics, a European joint venture of MBB/DASA in Germany and of TOTAL in France, has designed and built a pilot plant for production of a-Si PV modules. The MW-scale plant is close to completion at Putzbrunn near Munich. We introduce the basic constraints intrinsic to a-Si based PV production. The logistics of the line offers a high degree of flexibility for incorporating upgraded technologies and for processing a variety of PV modules. To our knowledge this is the only production line in the world in which in-line processing of single as well as multiple pin devices is possible. The flexible module sizing and patterning which is feasible in this line matches with the highly diversified market of small- and medium-size modules for professional and consumer OEM. In addition the pilot line is equipped for handling flexible glass substrates (1 mm) and for producing a neutral-colour semi transparency pattern. These features apply to PV cardecks that can be fitted to a wide range of sizes and 3-dimensional shapes in car design.
