Popis: Density instabilities are often associated with large deformations in rocks, and result in diapiric structures of different shape and dimension. The Finite Element model presented here is able to follow the large deformations in a simple two-layer model with inverted density stratification. The developing interface instability gives interesting insights into the dependence of the rising diapiric structures on the model geometry, and the viscosity contrast between the two fluids. The development of single diapiric structures, as well as families of diapirs, are studied with the Finite Element model.
