One of the most important results of dynamical systems theory is the possibility to determine dynamical invariants by virtue of a long-term integration. In particular, this applies to the set of Lyapunov exponents of systems with chaotic solutions. However, we demonstrate that the structure of a Lyapunov spectrum, i.e., the signs of the (nonzero) exponents, is accessible already if the local flow is known within some small (in principle infinitesimal) time interval. We present various examples, including one in an embedding space, and discuss possible applications. |
