Popis: This article is an examination of the background contexts that influenced the development of John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address. Drawing upon the extant manuscripts, correspondence, oral transcripts, interviews, and key background works of the period, the author examines Kennedy's political and life experiences, the speech composition process, and the political‐linguistic choices Kennedy made about the manuscript. Also examined are the effects of the Inaugural Address, which heighten its significance in the twentieth century and offer a perspective of the speech within the American tradition of progress and perfectibility.
