Increasing use of flexible fiberoptic endoscopy in both diagnosis and therapy of gastrointestinal disease, and recent worldwide concern regarding the transmission of HIV infection of health care workers together with reports of cross-infection of patients of possible epidemic proportions, has led to an increased awareness and reexamination of techniques used for instrument cleaning and disinfection. At the same time, the dangers of exposure of staff to the chemicals used in the these techniques with a measurable morbidity recently has been highlighted. |
