Computer systems used in quality environments need to be under total quality management during use and should be developed in a quality environment. The user can investigate the development environment by auditing the vendor, regardless of whether the vendor is internal or external to the company which uses the system. The paper explains the different aspects of a vendor's quality system, the questions to be asked and the documents to ask for. It also explains how a vendor audit may be performed, and what to look for during the audit. Vendor audit forms an important part of the system development life cycle. The system development life cycle [S.H. Segalstad, Lab. Autom. Inf. Manage., 31 (1995) 11] and validation [S.H. Segalstad and M.J. Synnevag, Chemom. Intell. Lab. Syst.: Lab. Inf. Manage., 26 (1994) 1 ] of computer systems in quality environments have been discussed previously by Segalstad, and Segalstad and Synnevag in this journal. |
