Popis: | The results of an 11-color photometric study of 20 globular clusters and eight open clusters in the Magellanic Clouds and three globulars in Fornax are reported. Because the photometric system is designed to measure absorption-line features in latetype spectra the important results relate to the metal content of globular clusters or old evolved systems. Comparison with similar photometry of a sample of galactic globular clusters shows that in the Clouds the metal abundance ranges from somewhat less than that of M15 and M92 to somewhat less than that of NGC 6356. In Fornax the lowest metal abundance appears to be significantly lower than that of M15, but a measurable range exists. Although the clusters in the Clouds follow the trend in metal abundance shown by clusters in our Galaxy, other as yet unknown factors besides interstellar reddening appear to cause scatter in this relationship. The special nature of the unusual globular clusters in the Clouds studied by Gascoigne and observed here is discussed, but strong conclusions are avoided. A brief discussion of the results on open clusters is given. (auth) |
