Popis:	The material reported in this article on the assessment activities of the Canadian provinces was obtained through publicly available reports (see the Bibliography) and correspondence with ministry officials and other individuals directly involved with the mathematics assessments. An earlier draft of the article was made available to these officials and to other contact persons in each province to verify the accuracy of the reports. Their help has been most valuable. In addition. the author wishes to thank Henry Schulz of the Manitoba Department of Education, who supplied valuable information from informal internal documents and who made helpful comments as the article developed.
