Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a diagnosis that is difficult for many physicians to make due to unfamiliarity with the diagnostic criteria, as well as the many potential diseases that it could be mistaken for. Many neurologic, vascular, inflammatory, myofascial, and psychiatric syndromes have the potential to be mistaken for CRPS because of symptomatic overlap. Utilizing the Budapest Criteria as the gold standard for CRPS diagnosis, as well as the various diagnostic criteria or clinical scenarios in which other pathologies occur, can help narrow the differential diagnosis in patients who are being considered as potentially having CRPS. The most common conditions often mistaken for CRPS will be discussed along with how to differentiate these diseases from CRPS using the Budapest Criteria along with clinical history and physical exam. |
