No Brasil e na Regiao Nordeste os segmentos idosos sao cada vez mais relevantes, influenciando as politicas publicas, as relacoes de genero e geracoes na familia e na sociedade. Este artigo faz uma breve revisao da literatura e apoia-se em dados empiricos para analisar inovacoes nas relacoes familiares das camadas populares, quando a familia se organiza sob a direcao da pessoa idosa, buscando alternativas para a vida cotidiana. FAMILY AND THE ELDERLY IN BRAZILIAN NORTHEAST The aging of the population is a challenge for the present society. In Brazil and in the Northeast region the segments of the elderly are becoming more relevant, influencing the public policies and the gender and generation relationships in the family and in the society. Based on empirical data, this paper makes a brief revision of the literature, analyzing the innovations in the family relationships in the popular layers, when the family is organized under the supervision of an old person, searching for everyday life alternatives.
