Popis: The image is one of the most suitable information input representations for future multimedia systems. However, it is difficult for conventional charge coupled device (CCD) systems to handle such image information, especially in high speed image processing such as motion picture processing. This is caused by the limitation of the frame rate of the CCD (1/60-1/30sec) and by the bus capacity between the CCD and the computer. To solve the problem of this transmission bottle neck, we have proposed a novel type of image sensor, an artificial retina (AR) chip, and we have demonstrated flexible and high-speed on-chip processing capabilities of the chip [1].
