A number of investigations have been conducted regarding the effect of various organic solvents on micellar properties of nonionic surfactant solutions. Some authors have suggested that micelles disappear by the addition of organic solvents to aqueous solution of nonionic surfactants in the same way as with ionic surfactants. However, none of them has been able to estimate the accurate concentration of solvent at which micelles disappear, because there is no way to detect the micelles in the presence of a large amount of solvent. Recently, the authors have investigated the charge-transfer (CT) interaction between nonionic surfactant micelles and 7, 7, 8, 8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in the solubilzed system, and it was suggested that this CT solubilization of TCNQ is useful as a means of obtaining information on the environment of the solubilizate in the micelles. In the present paper, the effects of several water-soluble organic solvents on the micellar destruction of the nonionic surfactant, homogeneous hepta-ethylene glycol dodecyl ether, is discussed from the viewpoint of the CT interaction of TCNQ with micelles in connection with the solubility parameter (SP) of added solvents.
