Popis: | The rapid development of genetic and prenatal testing since the 1950s has been paired with enormous needs for genetic counseling in industrialized countries. Counseling services have been institutionalized, standardized and expanded in response to ever-growing requests. In Heidelberg, the practice of genetic counseling can be traced back to the beginning of the 1960s, when an institute for human genetics was established at the University. This article examines how a concept for non-directive counseling impacted on the quality of counseling practices in Heidelberg throughout the 1980s. In Germany, genetic counseling services are mainly offered for eugenic and preventive considerations. How did the practices of genetic counseling change under the new paradigma of non-directiveness that was claimed as a desirable standard? Letters from Heidelberg human geneticists that were involved in genetic counseling, that were sent to patients (or rather, clients), provide insights into changing practices that are inevitable as the significance of genetic information grows, but also show that directive forms of counseling still existed within a non-directive standard until the end of the 1980s. |
