Popis: | Although Conant cited the depiction of Gunzo's dream (Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale MS lat. 17716, fol. 43) as evidence that the architects of Cluny III used the Vitruvian geometric figures of the square and half-square set pointwise, most now view the story it illustrates as a legend amply embellished by the biographers of Saint Hugh in their eagerness for miracles. In view of what archaeological investigations have revealed about the fairly complex methods and calculations of medieval architects, the formulation of the plans for Cluny III on the basis of information conveyed in a dream seems terribly anachronistic or naive. Nevertheless, the very use of the vehicle of the dream has historical, symbolic, and liturgical significance for Cluny.
