Popis: The chemisorption of pyrocatechnol and resorcinol on the surface of pyrogenic (fumed) silica has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The dependence of sorption on the silica pretreatment temperature has been investigated. Pyrocatechol has a higher reactivity, as evidenced by the lower temperature for maximum chemisorption in comparison with resorcinol. The higher reactivity of the pyrocatechol is due to the possibility of participation of the second OH group of the ortho isomer in the reaction — by double H+ transfer in a many-center transition state with an SNi-Si mechanism.
