Popis: Traditionally, the aims of treatment of the alcoholic have been designed to produce total abstinence; it being felt that this will be accompanied by an improvement in other areas of life. This aim remains that of the majority of treatment agencies in the U.K. Recently, this view has been challenged and the possibility of aiming for a different pattern; that of “normal”, “controlled” or social drinking has been suggested. Further, doubt has been expressed as to whether total abstinence does produce improvement in other areas, e.g. Gerrard et al (1962); also it is clear that on a wider issue that different treatment facilities in the same area, (Pattison 1973) may have different aims. It is the aim of this brief review to examine some strands in this continuing debate.
