Identity-Congruent Communication in User Interface Design: The Case of Medically Underserved Smokers

Popis: Internet-delivered smoking cessation interventions have proven somewhat effective but with only limited participation of lower income African American smokers in evaluation studies. The current study examined this disparity through web interface development and preliminary usability evaluation of a smoking cessation user interface among low-income African American smokers. An identity-congruent approach was proposed to guide the development and usability evaluation of the No Smokin' Hood interface. To develop the interface, 9 focus groups (n = 56) were conducted to gather perceptions of the web as resource in quitting smoking and identity-related preference in using smoking cessation websites. Eight participants were then recruited into 90-min interviews held in the usability lab at a large Midwestern university.
