The human mouth harbors one of the most diverse microbiomes in the human body and includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and archaea. This chapter revises the traditional methods utilized to study the mouth microbiota as well as novel technologies that allowed to have a complete picture of the oral microbial repertoire. The differences in microbiota composition between the different oral microenvironments saliva and mucosa and a broad stroke of the non-bacterial members of the oral microbiome are also presented. |
