Although some have assigned the term ���World War��� to earlier wars such as the French Wars of 1792���1815, this article deals with the first World War of the 20th century, which took place between 1914 and 1918. To contemporaries it was known as ���The Great War���. The article first tries to situate World War I in World History, before turning to the protagonists, the main features of the war, the course of events, the peace settlement and the War Guilt Debate. It also contains a table giving an overview over the course of events in different geographic areas. |
