Popis: The diagnosis of neuralgia is eminently clinical. Neuralgia is characterized by attacks of electric, stabbing pain in the distribution area of a nerve. The pain is usually triggered by nonpainful stimuli on triggering areas or points. Neuralgia is most prevalent in the trigeminal nerve. In most cases, neuroimaging test are needed to rule out symptomatic cases. Primary neuralgia is due to microvascular pressure on the nerve at the outlet from the brainstem. Symptomatic neuralgia can have atypical characteristics and abnormalities in the neurological examination. The initial treatment is pharmacological, with carbamazepine as the medication of choice. Surgical treatment is considered only in refractory cases.
