Popis:	The results of ecological monitoring in coastal waters along northeastern Sakhalin Island are presented. The patterns of the spatial distribution of water salinity, dissolved-oxygen content, as well as concentrations of inorganic phosphate and silicates over this area, were typical for the spring season. A bioassay with embryos of the sand dollar Scaphechinus mirabilis revealed abnormalities in early embryonic and larval development of the test object in the water sampled both near the coast and in the areas of oil production. The possible influence of natural (salinity) and anthropogenic factors on the environmental quality of the studied waters is discussed.
