The International Council o f Scientific Unions (ICSU) recently established the committee that will plan for and oversee the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP). The Special Committee for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (SCGB) has 19 members from 15 countries (Table 1). James J. McCarthy of Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.) has been appointed the committee's convenor and is expected to be elected chairman at SCGB's first meeting. McCarthy, presently at the Office for Interdisciplinary Earth Studies of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), Boulder, Colo., is also the editor of the new AGU journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles and a member of the AGU Earth as a System Committee. |
