Popis: The analysis of the arterial pulse wave becomes an important tool to assess the cardiovascular activity and arterial properties because it contains useful information about the left ventricle activity, the autonomic nervous system dynamics and the heart-brain interaction. The goal of this contribution is to illustrate the ability of the independent component analysis to solve several clinically significant problems including extraction of the reflected and the forward waves from the photoplethysmographical signal as well simultaneous separation of the respiratory and Mayer waves. While the former approach is aimed to increase the reliability of the arterial pulse parameters, the latter one may help to assess more accurately the state of the autonomic nervous system. In particular, the analysis uses dynamical embedding of the photoplethysmographical signal to extract the hidden sources within. In contrast to the standard approaches in time and frequency domain, the applied methodology allows the assessment of the sympathetic and parasympathetic activities based on the independency of the sources contributing to the change in system dynamics.
