Any discussion of the electrophysiological effects of opiate drugs in the central nervous system (CNS) should include effects on the electroencephalogram (EEG) and evoked potentials, as well as effects on single neurons. However, studies of ‘gross’ electrophysiological changes induced by opiates (Bradley, 1968; Navarro and Elliott, 1971) have not contributed significantly to our understanding of their mode of action, nor have any such studies been undertaken with the opioid peptides. Thus, this chapter will be restricted to a discussion of the effects of opiate drugs and opioid peptides on single neurons in the CNS. |
